Just bought a Mystere 6.0 and while I am enjoying it, I have discovered what Rick said (when I asked his opinion) that the rudder system is not great. Has anyone successfully converted to Nacra rudder system and does anyone have a used system for sale?

In addition the the Nacra rudders, you might also check out Dotan at http://www.dotan.com/

You could also buy Nacra/Prindle/Inter rudders new from your local dealer of the factory if you can't find any used ones.

Sail fast and have fun,
Alan Thompson
I20 - San Diego

Hi Boiler70, You probably have an older boat that never got the rudder mods that solved all the old problems years ago. Rick has not sailed a newer Mystere so is still under the misconception that current Mysteres have rudder problems. That has not been true for several years; in fact, the rudders are excellent now. You should contact Mystere (see the link at this site) and describe the year boat you have and let them know about your problems. I will not be surprised that they send you the parts you need for free because Mystere has excellent owner service. If you need any help, contact me directly and I will assist you. Take care, Mike

Congrat's on your new boat purchase. I have been racing the M6 for 4 or 5 years now, and I have not had any rudder problems. Don't get me wrong,, I understand why others have had difficulties, and I just want you to realize that those problems have been successfully addressed, before you invest in the expense of another rudder system.

Two other things: I would encourage you to subscribe to the Mystere discussion group at

and two,, forget the Dontan system,, we evaluated it's suitability a number of years ago and found it to be quite unsuitable.

Congratulations on your new purchase. I'm sure that you'll really enjoy your new boat. In spite of the stories you may have heard about rudder problems on the Mystere 6.0 I have raced an M6.0 now for 6-7 years and have never experienced any of the "major" rudder problems suggested by others "EXCEPT" when the rudders are not set up and balanced to the rig correctly. You will find that this is true for any and all sailboats. In fact, if you speak to any of the Nacra or Inter sailors you'll find they they too have had their share of rudder concerns in the past, there is a least one web site with pages dedicated to resolving Nacra 6.0 rudder problems. So you can see that this has been a shared concern for all the 20' boats. The solution is to simply get your setup correct.
I guess my point is that there is not a real problem with any of these boats it's just that we as sailors and tinkerers make changes to the factory systems and settings in order to get better or optimal performance and sometimes the results are not what we intended. You just need to get things setup correctly for your conditions and you'll have no more problems.
Now, as Mike Fahle suggested, if your boat is an older model then you can and should upgrade several of the componets, springs, adjuster screws and cams, for more reliable ones.
If I can help I'd be more than happy to as I know would any of the fine sailors reading these posts on a regular basis.

Thanx, Mike.
I have contacted Mystere via email, got a two liner from Yves stating that "springs and screws" are all I need to correct a flawed design, and a phone number for a local rep. The parts are not free nor is the redesigned system ($50.00 or $400.00 respectively). I also asked about a manual or rigging spec book...no answer, but the rep says none available, but he'll "tune the boat for $30.00 plus travel." I sounds like I'm stuck with either a poor design, a new one from the same people, or an after market Dotan some don't like either. I'll let you know how this plays out. Thanx again.
