Posts: 3,293 Long Beach, California | Slipped to third witha 16 in race 4. Enrique having a tough regatta, too, in 22nd with a 40.
Do they have a throwout in international events?
Keep pushing, USA!

Posts: 545 Brighton, UK | Leigh MacMillan provides his account:
"Once again we gained on the run moving into 3rd place. The final upwind again looked like a similar right hand favoured course, however we again took a short hitch left and then came across in a left hander and pressure and were right up behind the Greeks and pushing for second on the water (but first in the results after the OCS boats had been discounted). Disaster nearly struck as Mark's trapeze gear failed and he was dropped into the water, fortunately he held on to the mainsheet and managed to drag himself back on board, not losing any places. The final run saw us dual with the Greeks and nearly beat them losing out on the line by a few feet. Lange and Espinola finished third.
"In between the races we fixed the trapeze gear and then waited for the second race, all the while the breeze building. The race officer started us and again the right was favoured, and again we had a good start from the middle. Unfortunately there were no lanes across and we rounded the top mark in the 20s. Mitch Booth had hit hard right and led comfortably. We then smoked the run to get back in to the race by the bottom mark, until our mainsail ripped in half on the gybe. This ended our race and means that with four races left we have used our discard. From this account I guess they only get one discard, Go UK! | | | Re: Looks like they get a discard/throwout

Posts: 545 Brighton, UK | Speaking of discards I bet these UK RYA Hobie 16 youth championship sailors are glad they get a throw out, imagine only coming 2nd in a race.
Hobie 16 – 10 entries 1, Tom Phipps/Jon Cook, Restronguet SC (1,1,1,1,1,1,(1,)(2),1,1) 9 pts 2, Simon Kearns/Ben Burns (3,5,6,3,2,2,2,4,4) 24 pts 3, San Newton/Nick Taylor, Restronguet (2,2,3,6,5,6,(8),3,4,1,(7) 32pts | | | Youth champs...

Do you know if that is the UK's youth team for Worlds in July? I haven't seen a list of registered teams yet, but heard the UK was sending a good one.
Was this Youth Champs sailed on the 16 with a 'chute? I'll be surfing for the website, but if you could post it, other's could follow.
Thanks for the info -

Posts: 612 Cape Town, South Africa | Hi John, This off the Tornado Worlds web-site, see link at beginning of thread : "7 Youth teams (both crew less than 21 years old) are participating in the event and for the first time the title of Youth World Champion will be awarded. Austrians Thomas Zajac/Thomas Czajka French Moana Vaireaux/Romain Petit Baptiste Balzeau/Gael Ledoux Guillaume Coyon/Lucas Millieret Fancois Morvan/Matthieu Vandame Francois Gabart/Romain David Greek Constantinos Gkiris/Andreas Tsamitas" Looks like they are competing for "youth tornado world champs" within the official T worlds. Amazing ... under 21 & chasing the big boys for top finishes - sounds like our class, where we`re getting a beating from 2 16 year olds . These youngsters are using Tornado Worlds to practice for the Youth Worlds on H16`s, imagine the level of sailing that can be expected from them by the time the Youth Worlds kicks off. Looks like the rest of us are too old !!! Cheers Steve | | | Re: Youth champs...

Posts: 545 Brighton, UK | John I understand this is the selections for the Volvo Sailing ISAF World Championships. This information is from http://www.thedailysail.comI am sure they won't mind me posting this snippet if I add that this is an excellent subscription only site with tons of sailing news and well worth the money! Similarly in the Hobie 16 class Tom Phipps and Jon Cook from Restronguet are dominating the fleet discarding a second as their worst result. The pair have only been sailing for a year but attending the same school the pair have been training hard leading up to the event and have their sights set firmly on the international circuit. Fifteen points behind are Simon Kearns and Ben Burns are in second place......
RYA youth selectors have one day left before they announce the RYA British team for the Volvo Sailing ISAF World Championships that happen during July. Reaching and even winning the event is the pinnacle of youth sailing and past names like Olympic gold medallists Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy have all qualified through the RYA Youth Championships and Trials to represent their country. The pressure is now on as sailors enter the last day of the championships.

Starting out by giving the competition a headstart by scoring a 20 and 32 !
Than come back to lead the board by scoring a 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st in the following races.
Wow !
You don't see that very often in a class with such a high level of competition. This is more the fabric of some feel good movie than reality.

Posts: 612 Cape Town, South Africa | ..... Then straight back down to 28, man, if I was there I`d be much more consistent - 63,63,63 Looks like the whole fleet were playing russian roullette, must have been anybody`s race until the finish line in each race. To have the most number of first places in a regatta, only to finish 7th overall, man that`s scary. Glad I sail at a much lower level, don`t think I could handle the stress. Posts: 4,451 West coast of Norway | Just a side note to this old thread. Hans Wallen (from Sweden) has made a new Tornado video clip available on his web site.. http://www.wallen.se/files/539cadis6.mpg According to his site, there is some controversy regarding the olympic selection process in sweden as well. The team with the best score at the recent worlds has been selected, altough this team apparently dont have the best accumulated score in the regattas used for choosing the olympic team.. Very strange! | | |
