Hello everyone, I have a 78 Sailcraft of Canada Tornado and I am not happy with Barber-Hauler setup for this boat. I do not like the steel wire going port-starboard about 3 feet aft of the front cross beam, and cannot trim the sail without a great effort. Does anyone have pictures of their setup, maybe I have mine wrong. I don't race in regattas so "rules" are not a concern. I have seem some pics threading lines under the tramp but none show enough detail. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Chris in Alberta Canada.

Sounds like you've not threaded the jib 2:1 purchase correctly around the hexaratchet block. The wire line is called the "horse" and has nothing to do with the barberhauler (the line running into the forebeam from a small block around the jib sheet line). The horse cable allows you to place the sheeting (hexarachet) block fore/aft to change the angle the sail is pulled at, tensioning/easing the leech/foot of the sail to suit conditions.

I've recently purchased a Tornado and am dicking around with the rigging. It's barberhauler is not set up through the front beam like I've seen on other boats.

Question
If I follow the barberhauler from the starboard side, it starts on a block/becket on the jib sheet, travels into the front beam on the starboard side - how, where.

Through the beam to the port side, exits front beam - how, where - and through a jam cleat.

Any help would be appreciated. Looking for ideas - both new and tried 'n true

From my Classic Rig up this thread:

Barberhauler attached to jib sheet is the blue w. white fleck ending in a block w. becket...line runs out of shot to the right...:



...and into front beam at an opening near the outer gunwale. This opening has an exit block inside the beam, and a camcleat on a bracket outside the beam:



Then the line exits on the other side through a similar arrangement, ending at another block w. becket on the jib sheet.

You can now haul in the barberhauler from the opposite (ie. windward) side of the boat, causing the jib sheeting point to move forward & outboard on the leeward side.

Mike - I think I have a similar setup on my Mystere. What I struggle with is that if you shorten the barberhauler on one side, you are making it longer on the other side. So at the next tack / gybe, you have to adjust again, the opposite way, right?
And if you don't uncleat before the tack/gybe, you'll have to get the crew to crawl to the leeward side to uncleat the barberhauler so you can pull it in...
At least that's what I've understood of the system so far...I may be missing a few pieces of the workings here. Comments?

You've understood it perfectly...it does take some forethought prior to throwing the gybes. Never struck me as a problem...since I grew on on these boats and it became second nature.
Now I sail the modern rig with spinny/self-tending jib and have not had to think about the 'hauler' again unitl I saw this post...

THe 'hauler' was very important for racing to get the jib clew outboard & forward off-wind. Really opened up the slot and prevented backwinding. Not necessary for pleasure-sailing.
