I suppose I'll start this one just like the others with the NOAA prediction map (this will automatically update as the prediction updates). Here comes "Dangerous Hurricane Ivan" as indicated by NOAA. Does anyone know a weather dance that we can do to ward these things away? I'll certainly do it. We were very fortunate that Frances turned down the volume before hitting land. Let's hope that Ivan does the same because, although it is pretty far away, it is already a category 4.

Bob, your insight is awesome! - Please continue to keep us posted!

I am just glad this is only for a small season and we don't have to dodge these things all year....that would suck!!

If it holds that course, it will wipe out 50% of Cuba!

However, my faith in our existing computer forecast modeling has been a bit challenged this year....but then I think about what it must have been like when the only time we knew a hurricane was coming was when it was upon us.

Now I know this is a bit off topic but I was watching some news coverage of Huricane Frances and the comentator was going on about the big waves coming in and a crazy surfer going out to surf in them. The waves weren't even two meters. They were tiny!!! What kind of waves do you guys normally get over there. Obviously not very big ones!!!

The east coast of Florida is not exactly surfer paradise. More like the bunny slope on a ski mountain.

The Florida Atlantic coast wave size is relative. They are huge if you're a roach on a popsicle stick. Roaches hang six, dude.

For some reason, in photos and video, waves always look much smaller than they really are.

"It ain't the meat, it's the motion..."

When it comes to storm surf, it's not just the size. With waves at 3-5 second intervals and coming from all directions there is no set reef or sandbar to line up at. Add a 30+ knot cross wind and a 5 knot rip and it's just madness. Big fun, however. I bodysurfed Hurricane Felix off Virginia Beach at about 8 foot and got carried about 4 miles along the beach over the 45 minutes I was out. Just swimming in God's wrath was worth the experience but a few top to bottom drop ins were memorable beyond belief. I could not have done it with the windage of a board. I swam in feeling like a bird thru a turbofan.

You would have enjoyed our conditions out here this weekend. Head to head and a half high. Last night was clean head high lefts (about 10-12 foot faces). Sunday Oceanside (California) was the nations hot spot at 103 degrees. Dry heat, surf and not much wind. NICE... Sorry guys.

Bob,
How do you get to be the forecaster that signs the report at the bottom of the forecast?

I keep waiting to see your name... is it coming?
