That is a "clam shell" spinnaker retreival system. They had it rigged on the beach at 2000 Texel. Seemed to work well there but it never made it to the water that I saw. RD has been sailing it in the US with a tramp bag probably because they have been doing distance races and can choose from more chutes.

http://user.tninet.se/~zdt420t/index.htm - click on both the M20 and M18 pages there are good pictures and exlpinations of the Marstrom spinnaker retrival system. The best imformation is on the M18 page. It looks very good.
On the M20 boats the pole is held in place by 2 carbon rods (they are in the pictures). Somebody helping move the boat before the Texel use one of them as a handle. It broke and the M20 never got off the beach :-(

'When you take down the gennaker you just head downwind and pull the retrieve line and the whole thing is rolled into the gennaker launcher. It also tightens the sheets so they don't drag in the water while going upwind'
Anyone who's used this, Does the retreival line somehow also roll it up, or do you use some sort of crank on the side of it?
Enquiring minds want to know.
Kinda cool how it does like like a turbocharger hood scoop, since the headsail is kinda like a turbocharger.

I used this system successfully on the when sailing around Texel. Without it things would have a bit more tricky. The scoop on M18 was a scaled down scoop from M20.
The retreival line is also rolled up inside the scoop.
Is the retrieval line similiar to the I-20?, with the line continuous with the halyard? How is it retieved, or wound up in the clam shell? The retrieval line somehow, a crank, what, what??.
