I wonder what the approximate weight for the mast from a 1981 hobie 16 should be with all items removed that are not riveted. The darn thing seems pretty heavy to me, but I am able to carry it around (I have not hit any of our cars with it while moving it around... but that is sure to happen eventually) -Matt
It seems like taking the weight of the mast would be a good place to start in order to determine whether or not the mast has water in it. Am I missing something?
The easiest way to find out if the mast has water in it is to take it off the boat and hold it up to your ear while you rock it back and forth (one end up, then down) slowly and listen for the water sloshing.
You can hear an amazingly small amount of water in the mast this way. If there's substantial water in the mast, you'll feel it AND hear it.

For some reason, I thought that there was foam in the mast that may or may not be saturated. Maybe that is just in the hulls. There is no water in the mast that I can hear, so I guess that is a good sign. I'll try to see if the mast floats the next time I go sailing. Thanks! -Matt
