I just saw an advertisment for a N6.0 that says it has a class legal carbon fiber mast. How is that class legal?

I believe that it might be class legal. There were a few, maybe 2 or 3 6.0s with carbon fiber masts that were grandfathered in back in the mid 90s. They had to use the same double diamond arrangement and they had to use the same mainsail cut for the aluminum (very bendy) mast. In competition they were not superior as configured. To the best of my recollection, the class at that time voted to refuse further carbon fiber masts but grandfathered in the few in existence in so long as they stayed with the original boat they came with. You might see if Garrett Norton has notes from the class meeting where it happened.

They are in fact class legal. The Cathouse had (maybe still has) a Nacra 6.0 with a stock carbon mast. (www.cathouse1.com)

Trey, so because someone is selling it, it is therefore class legal?

There were 5 or so that were sold that way. They weren’t all grand fathered to be class legal. In memory only 3 were registered. Once the judgment was made, all carbon masts had to registered to be class legal. A number was given to each mast and a decal was issued and fixed to all class legal masts. In short if the boat has the document and or the decal attached to the mast then it is class legal.

I had # 2 which was sold to a Hobie 20 owner.
