Posts: 984 2017 F18 Americas Site | [color:"blue"]Rule 11 applies and Red must keep clear. Blue is sailing this course only to keep clear of Green, and has therefore not broken Rule 22.2 which requires a boat not to change course if her only purpose is to interfere with a boat on another leg.[/color] Blue's intention in not to hinder Red but her primary obligation is to keep clear of Green. Blue has no "room at the mark" rights to tack inside Green for a rounding, too late to duck, and has "leeward boat rights" on Red. This is not a great circumstance to be in, but Blue is really choosing the best of all evils. It is too bad for Red not to have anticipated that this would happen, but it was setting up before she rounded. ![[Linked Image]](http://members.aol.com/ddelave/sailing/ruleanimation.gif) Later, Dan | | | Re: Rules Quiz - difficult 4

Posts: 248 Colorado | Though blue is in the right here, it made a bone-headed move. Why didn't it dip green and round? Crash-tacking under the mark seems like a bad choice and in a crowd will surely cause a problem.

Posts: 1,382 Essex, UK | The point about the rules quiz is not what you or I would do in a particular situation but what rules apply in a given situation. No system is perfect and there are even situations that probably won't arise. BUT in this situation, should it happen, who has right of way? - answer: Blue
Further to that I've seen this situation occur at least a couple of times at major championships where 'Blue' comes steaming in thinking he'll find a gap in the line of boats coming into the A mark and, hey, guess what? - so he has to tack and now can't lay the mark. Usually though 'Blue' doesn't carry on but gybes round and slots into a gap further down the fleet. Makes you think though if you are 'Red' doesn't it?
