That is excellent. I'm afraid I did not do very well.

9/10 on the easy ones
8/10 on medium
7/10 on the hard

Guess I'll be up late reading tonight

DSYC:

If you take the mark away what happens? What if the boat that you are talking about does not have to round that mark? They may be in another race going to another mark or they are not racing at all.

I do not know what you mean by situation 4 so I am just guessing.

Later,
Dan

They have easy ,hard and difficult questions called situations Dan. And yes we are talking about the same incident red at the windward mark and green about to round it with blue deciding to go below the mark in last place only to cut red off. And blue has right of way .With the mark on the course and the 3 boats following we have to presume they are all in the same class race and to interfere with a boat ahead of you on a decided course would seem unsportmanlike. But I have had a hard time with the course before, so be it.

I disagree with the application of the rule to the animation in this one. I would say that both red & green have entered the two boat length zone. However I can't find anywhere in the rules where it discusses what part of a boat has to enter the two boat length circle. Hence I would conclude that it is (similarly to overlap and finishing) at the point when her hull or equipment in normal position first enter the two boat length zone. In the animation the sails of both boats in normal position have entered the circle.

No, sorry, have to agree with the quiz answer. Windward boat keeps clear. Blue tacked to avoid Green. Just unfortunate for Red that this meant that he was trapped as windward boat in this situation.

[color:"blue"]Rule 11 applies and Red must keep clear. Blue is sailing this course only to keep clear of Green, and has therefore not broken Rule 22.2 which requires a boat not to change course if her only purpose is to interfere with a boat on another leg.[/color]

Blue's intention in not to hinder Red but her primary obligation is to keep clear of Green. Blue has no "room at the mark" rights to tack inside Green for a rounding, too late to duck, and has "leeward boat rights" on Red. This is not a great circumstance to be in, but Blue is really choosing the best of all evils. It is too bad for Red not to have anticipated that this would happen, but it was setting up before she rounded.

Though blue is in the right here, it made a bone-headed move. Why didn't it dip green and round? Crash-tacking under the mark seems like a bad choice and in a crowd will surely cause a problem.

The point about the rules quiz is not what you or I would do in a particular situation but what rules apply in a given situation. No system is perfect and there are even situations that probably won't arise. BUT in this situation, should it happen, who has right of way? - answer: Blue

Further to that I've seen this situation occur at least a couple of times at major championships where 'Blue' comes steaming in thinking he'll find a gap in the line of boats coming into the A mark and, hey, guess what? - so he has to tack and now can't lay the mark. Usually though 'Blue' doesn't carry on but gybes round and slots into a gap further down the fleet. Makes you think though if you are 'Red' doesn't it?
