Can someone please explain roll tacking. I have read everything I could find using "search" and have not come up with an explination of what it is or directions on how to do it.
Thank you.

Sorry for this little infomercial, but It is very well explained in my book, Catamaran Racing: For the 90s (here is the URL: http://store.catsailor.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=jqcmhpjpe) and better shown in my video Upwind Sailing and The Cat Roll Tack. (here is the URL: http://store.catsailor.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=jqcoomerq)

For a two person boat, there are MUSTS for skipper and MUSTS for the crew.

Or better yet, come to one of my seminars (URL: http://www.sailingseminars.com) I am doing one this week during Wave Week. Great learning clinic.
Good luck,
Rick

I might be intrested in your book Rick but the title says racing and I'm just a recreatinal sailor who sails by myself or with an inexperienced passenger. So is it a racing move that has to have two people to exicute?

I'm still looking for a general explination if someone would be kind enough.......

Treven,
Santa Cruz, Ca.

Rick's book is incredibly useful to everyone, not just racers! I highly recommend it. If you order from Rick he says he'll autograph it, too.

Basics are stay on the old windward back corner of the tramp until the bows are through the wind and then rush up to the new windward front corner.

Warm regards, Jim

Thanks Jim. I'll get his book.

I really like that picture of you flying a hull! I'm going to have to get someone to shoot a few of me some time.

Cat roll tacking is not done for the same reasons as monohull roll tacking.
As a cat turns in either a gybe or tack, the outside hull has to travel further. The idea of a roll tack or gybe is to get the outside hull out of the water a bit to cut down the drag on this hull.
The basic idea is to keep your weight on the more stationary hull[near the stern]. In light winds, the crew moves 1st in the tack and the helm moves 1st in the gybes.

Hope that this helps

Paul
