I have a carbon mast on my I20 and I love it. It is super-light when rigging/derigging the boat, and my back greatly appreciates this. They also reduce the pitching tendency of the boat a little, and make righting easier after a capsize.

I once dropped while raising the mast when the mast ball came off of the boat. There was no damage to the mast except for a small scratch at the mast head cap.

While aluminum is cheaper (maybe half the cost), in every other way carbon is more desirable.

Sail fast and have fun,
Alan Thompson
I20 - San Diego

Alan,
Do you happen to know how much your I20 mast weighs complete with diamond wires, tangs, downhaul, etc.?
I was thinking an I20 mast might work nice on my 18sq. The I20 main is about the same size as the sq and the mast would be strong enough for a Spi.

Good Sailing
I'm off to check my lottery tickets

Not sure of the exact weight. I would say the I20 carbon mast is maybe 1/2 - 2/3 the weight of a Prindle 19 aluminum mast, with both fully rigged.

Alan
