That's not the startting line, it's the mark rounding at the lighthouse. Sort of a C mark. At the very most north tip of the island. Here is where the boats go between two islands and sail into the inland shallow sea that is the waddensee. In effect they curve round the lighthouse.

hate to say it,but the picture shows the north side of the island were we have to turn from a broad reach to an beam reach the (25-30 knots wind)
