The July CABB race will be the Wild Thing Buoy Races. This will be a series of buoy races held just off the Rickenbacker Causeway in Miami. The date for the regatta will be next Saturday, July 29. The crew meeting will be at 10:30. Bring your stopwatch to record your finish times after each race. Come on out for the sailing fun. See you there.
The USSailing Youth Multihull Championships were held here in Miami July 13-16. This championship was hosted by the Miami Yacht Club. There were 14 teams from across the country competing on Hobie 16s. There were six teams with South Florida crews. Most of these South Florida youths are sons, daughter, and nieces of some of the hottest multihull sailors in the nation. The baton is being passed on to the next generation.
Sarah and Elizabeth Newberry won the regatta with a six point lead over the second place team. Luke Lawrence and Alex Sacks finished in third place, only one point behind the second place team. Other local teams included; Raquel and Raul Lopez, Jared Sonnenklar/Lucas Kelly, Kaitlin Yasher/Sierra Manno, and Kathryn Schneider/Lindsey Young.
Jamie Livingston has been instrumental in supporting youth catamaran sailing through the Miami Yacht Club's youth sailing programs. He has coached and mentored the teams for many years. Andrea Livingston has also been a key supporter of the youth sailing programs. Linda Evans, the vice commodore of the MYC, was the regatta chair. Also helping out with the regatta were Dan and Gloria Lawrence. They supplied and manned one of the chase boats. Raul Lopez also supplied and manned one of the race committee boats. I went out with him on Thursday of the regatta weekend when they were doing practice races. Steve Lohmayer also helped out on race committee. Many other local sailors helped out with the regatta. Several South Florida Hobie 16 sailors donated the use of their boats for the regatta. They were enticed with a brand new set of sails for their boats.
This regatta was a major undertaking. Congratulations to all who put on this very successful event for the youth sailors. Complete results, stories, and pictures of the regatta can be found on the USSailing website at
