Darren Bundock and Glenn Ashby have won the New South Wales Championships with only one point to spare on Wallis Lake on the mid-north NSW coast, near Foster this week.

Bundock and Ashby competing at their first regatta after returning from Europe three weeks ago sailed a Hobie Cat Tiger Formula 18 supported by Nissan, Hobie Cat, Ronstan and Marinepool.

Racing was extremely tight with the added interest of the 2007 World Championships in Yeppoon, Queensland in February attracting the top catamaran sailors into the class.

Steve Brewin, former A Class World Champion with Andrew Williams finished one point behind the 2004 and 2005 F18 World Champions.

Young future stars Matt Homan and Andrew Cook battled hard for third place and spoiled a good score card with their final race.

The fleet enjoy a variety of conditions with breezes reaching 20 knots on the Saturday, 8 to 12 knots sea breeze on Sunday and 5-8 for the final race on Monday.

The only real pressure was put on Bundock and Ashby by themselves after leading race two, they completing an extra lap before finishing and losing 19 places in the process.

Bundock commented ' we blew it in the second race when we mis-counted the laps, it was like taking a victory lap without the victory, but the conditions were fantastic with strong breeze and perfectly flat water we were having such a good time'

Ashby said 'It was always close racing and it is going to be a great season with the National Championships in three weeks and finally a World Championship in our home country. I guess this event was a good warm up for us to start off the Australian season'

Bundock and Ashby's summer season highlights will be F18 Nationals in Frankston, Victoria from 4th November, followed by the Olympic Tornado South Americans and World Championships in Argentina from 20 November and the Formula 18 World Championship in Yeppoon Queensland from 17 February 2007.

Tough Fleet Down Under!!!

Very tough fleet....

To give you a bit of an idea, 8th place is the currnet AUS Tornado National Championship skipper with 9th being the 2003 AUS T Champ skipper. (Bundy did not compete)

This is why we have joined this class..... Such tough racing and you must realy fight for every single place.

Look out for Steve Brewin / Andrew Williams who came very close to knocking of Bundy / Gashby. Brewin (A Class) and Willy (Taipan 4.9) took delivery and assembled their new Capricorn at the event, their first F18 and raced with a Brewin made main sail.

Matt Homan in 3rd are also new recruits from the Taipan 4.9 class, purchasing a Capricorn for the up coming Worlds.

The following sailors in the fleet have previously won World Championships in other classes.

Darren Bundock (1st F18), Glann Ashby (1st F18), Steve Brewin (2st F18), Greg Goodall (6th F18), Brad Collet (7th F18), Richard Brewin (8th F18)

2nd Gen F18s.

About 3 Infusions from Queensland were to come and join us, however the container still has not arrived in the country and they were forced to sit it out.

Our National Championships are in a month and it is expected 4 to 5 infusions will be there.

I suppose it would not have been so close if Bundy could count the right laps..replace his 20 with a 1 and it does not look so close to me. Probably could have gone home a day early.

Bundy was building his boat straight out of the box on the Saturday morning.

Result below if you replaced Bundy's 20th with a 1st.

1st Bundy/Gashby - 1, 1, 3, [3], 1 = 6 with a drop
2nd Stevie/Willy - 4, 1, 1, [7], 2 = 8 with a drop

FYI if Bundy did not race the last race or did not score a 1st or 2nd, than Stevie / Willy would have won on tie breaker. See below.

1st Stevie/Willy - 4, 1, 1, [7], 2 = 8 with a drop
2nd Bundy/Gashby - 1, 1, 3, 3,[DNC] = 8 with a drop

Correct, they assembled the new boat which was the same as boats they race all around the world (Factory Tiger)... Set the boat up probably the same as they do to their other boats, tuned them the same using their years of experience they have gathered racing the factory Tigers all over the world.

Stevie / Willy have never raced a F18 together before. They sailed their fathers Capricorn (not raced) only a couple of times just recently. Took delivery of their new boat, developed a main sail for it, tuned the boat, got on the water to race the Capricorn for the first time and gave perhaps the 2 best catamaran sailors the world has seen, a very hard time.

Credit where credit is due mate....... Bundy / Gashby came through in the end, but had to fight very hard for it.

Stevie and Willy should be a powerfull combination when they get to know the boat.

Bundy cant count but it seams you cant either...sorry not being nasty.

Bundy would have had 1,1,(3),2,1 (total of 5)
Brewin would have had 4,2,1,(7),2 (total of 9)

Therefore, bundy could have gone home and carried a 3 and still won..

Looks like brewin actually only out sailed Bundy in 1 race. Who know what the future will hold.. I cant wait to see. Im hoping to get to Yeppoon to check it out.

Ahh yes appologies...... Screwed up a little when trying to make the results a little more frendlier to the eye.

Bundy / Gashby are all class but even they would admit they did not have it easy. The quality of the F18 fleet both in AUS and Internationaly gives no free rides.

Congrats to Stevie and Willy also...... Lets wish them a big future.
