Posts: 3,114 BANNED | Here in the UK we traditionally have bonfire night on November the 5th. In the past boats that are abandoned usually go on the sailing clubs bonfire to make way for new more active members. This was easy with wooden boats and an angle grinder works fine for GRP boats. That said we have our bonfire on the beach and with the strong prevailing south westerly winds we have I am sure the fire gets up to a temperature that could easily deal with the aluminium masts and beams of a cat.
I'm presuming that these boats are those which have become property of the club due to unpaid dues or something? I guess posession is 9/10ths of the law :P | | | Re: Any nautical/sailing pet peeves?

Posts: 12,310 South Carolina | For instance: sailing upwind from A mark ... Hmmm....sailing UPWIND from the A mark? Just where are you headed, the distant horizon? I guess the crew SHOULD point out that it's time to tack soon. duh-huh....perhaps THAT's been my problem! (zoiks...that should'a read "c")

Posts: 195 Straight Outta Hell | Aw yeah,
As an RC, it gets my last nerve when:
1. People can't fill out a simple entry form correctly, including KNOWING YOUR: a.Portsmouth number; b.SAIL number
2. Usually, the people referenced in 1. come up to us and whine about their Portsmouth number or something else they 'think' is unfair. And this without real evidence or data to back their assertion, or any real understanding of the Portsmouth concept.
So, my pet peeve? Ya-yas who aren't SUPER respectful to the VOLUNTEER race committee people who aren't getting JACK for their trouble, and who make it POSSIBLE for these same ya-yas to RACE.
This sig would be something witty, but the censors are against that.

Posts: 118 St. Louis, MO | My biggest peeve is hearing tactical things that really have no meat. For instance: sailing upwind from A mark with a closed start line while driving and being focused on the sails in some lightish breeze, I ask "how are we doing with the start line?" and get a response similar to "uuuuuummmm....we look probably OK" - that'll get me going. Ummm...welll..Idunno Jake...I know I'm still a relative rookie compared to the likes of you...but....if you are sailing "upwind" from A mark....why do you even care about the starting line...or anything else related to the course for that matter since you are sailing away from the entire course???? perhaps your crew should respond by kicking you in the nuts to get your attention!!! (edit: Oops...should've read a bit further...Parker beat me to the punch!!)
