Posts: 96 Racine, Wisconsin | Anybody ever remove that damn cable and replace it wih a few winds of Spectra? I have heard of doing this, but still wonder just how well it really works. It sounds a whole lot more confortable for the crew. Comments appreciated.

Posts: 364 | I did. It works great, and yeah, it sure is easier on the crew. I know of at least one other person that has done it too. I think it's 1/8", doubled. I centered it on one of the shackles and used a fid to lead it back and forth thru itself at roughly 8" intervals, then brummel-spliced loops in both bitter ends and attached to the other shackle. It's worked out great so far.

Posts: 1,449 | We used to have this sytem on Taipan 4.9s.
We found the jib didn't need much adjusting if any. Only when you change mast rake.
So chucked the whole lot away and put a couple of eyelets in the tramp for adjustment.
Much better setup.
I know that the voices in my head aint real, but they have some pretty good ideas. There is no such thing as a quick fix and I've never had free lunch!

I'm not sure the other poster's were completely clear. The way you want to do the jib will not work. You must run the line out to the edge and put the bungee in the middle in order for the system to work.
There are many other systems out there. I've seen people replace the wire with spectra but it does stretch and has to be retightened once in a while. Spectra also will wear through where it is tied but you can see it wearing and replace accordingly.

Posts: 3,116 Annapolis, MD | Randy Smyth has a tramp design for use on his MX rig. They use the tornado style loops in the tramp with a snap shackle for adjusting the jib lead positions. I raced on Harry Murphy's MX and the boat is actually user friendly without the cheese cutter.
If you need a new tramp... I would certainly go for it.

I currently have the tramp jib block attachments. It works well, and I don't really like the 4-way. However, I also like to be able to use everything the boat came with. The jib blocks are now set up with Wichard spring hooks to attach either to the spectra loops on the tramp, or to the blocks on the 4-way. The entire 4-way; cable, lines, blocks, cleats, snorkle, and travelers, all slide out of the track and can be set aside. The 4-way is now laced as original except that the v-cleats were replaced with cam cleats that sit on the same plate as everything else. With the 4-way removed, there is very little to hurt yourself on. It's nice to have all the options open. I'll post a picture when the tramp is back on. | | | Re: 4-way jib question - Tramp Modifications?

Posts: 74 Maryland, USA | Can anyone recommend someone to update my tramp for the ability to attach the jib blocks directly? Including having some knowledge of where to put the attachments? I also want to get the threads re-sewn. They are starting to deteriorate. (10 years old - mostly under a cover)
I like Dennis's option to be able to use the 4 way for more serious racing if you need it, or to remove for more casual sailing. My casual sailing crew (wife) would really appreciate it.
