Yep, Ice boats are fun. A year ago I got home 2 hrs late from iceboating and the wife was mad. I couldn't keep the grin off my face I had so much fun sailing. That just got her more mad. Dog houses are comfortable.

If they were block to block the sail would not have proper flow. Believe me when I broke a boom to leech shackle on my Hobie 17 in a Wed night race I learned the meaning of it REAL fast. I had to southern construct one out of line. Lot of difference in 2" and 12" I was block to block way before the main was sheeted in enough and had 12' under boom on tacks. REAL bad DAY. DN's are sweet boas.

Doug,

The sail shape on a DN is so much different even than a cat. We have very bendy mast that will cause the sail to bow out and depower when we are block to block.

The block hanger on the H-17 is another item to check often. Usually it will crack at the rivet before breaking. Another back up most of us use is to tie a short line between the block and the boom. Should the hanger break, you can still sail until getting back on shore. The block hanger is also a low cost item to carry in your H-17 tool kit.

Caleb:

SOMEHOW? I exploded a stainless shackle right before a race with me and Ashleigh. She didn't know enough about helming to keep me in irons, so I had to do the best I could with a short piece of line. We did the race, but got tanked, because I couldn't sheet in enough with out going block to block. H17 are fun boat are they? (LOL)

Doug, have ever even seen a DN ice boat except in a picture. With the mast rake and mast flex the DN goes block to block to depower. Get a clue before responding next time.
