Does anybody have recommendations for boat insurance? I have used Boat U.S. in the past.
Thanks

I've not had a claim with them but have been quite happy with Progressive...they were the only people I called that actually had information or had ANY idea what a "Nacra F18" was in early 2005. I've been with them ever since and every year I don't have a claim, they drop 25% off my deductible. Price-wise, they were comparable with State Farm. I have a 23' monohull, my F18, and both trailers ensured with Progressive.

I was with Boat US for a 27ft monohull and my 6.0. Never had a claim on either so I don't know anything about the service for the most part. I switched to USAA which basically kicked me to Progressive. Both were relatively expensive (250 or so for the trailer and boat) but that is because where I live for the most part.

compared State Farm and Progressive and they are real close in cost (for me). I did, unfortunately have a claim w/SF and it was handled with absolutely no problem or hesitation. My premiums have not been affected.

Just my experience.

Just curious,
In The Netherlands most insurance companies start paying from a certain amount of damage (own risk) with special clauses for mailsails.
(eg. with €1000 of damage they pay €600 if you have a €400 own risk policy (which most people have).)

Ditto on Clayton experience, except I've had several claims.

I did have to explain racing without a motor to them on several occasions.

Same here, you can usually specify what level of "deductible" (own risk) you want. You usually have choices of $250, $500, or $1000. I started with $500 with progressive but after two years, they've reduced it to $250 without increasing my premium. In two more years, my deductible will be $0.

I had to explain to them that theres no point in buying insurance unless I was going to race. The guy I talked to didn't "think" that it covered racing, even when I told him that the entire point of owning a performance multihull was to race it.

15 minutes after I hung up with him, he called me back and said "well I'll be damned it does cover racing!"

Funny.

You need liability even if you don't race...

Gotta give a shout-out to the USSA one-design insurance program. It is the gold standard racing policy. If you're a weekend warrior on a budget, Progressive is great (I have it on the Wave, and used to have it on the Mystere 4.3). If you travel alot and race more seriously, consider spending a little more to get a policy specifically designed for sailboat racing. Most big one-design associations made the effort already to get their classes recognized (thanks Dave Ingram for getting Formula 18s done!). Top shelf damage and liability coverage with charter and international provisions, but pricier as a result.

John,

A year or so ago I checked with them and they wouldn't cover sails. Has that changed?

Mine are covered, but I think it depends on the policy you choose. The insurer understands racing well enough to know that five-year-old spinnakers sometimes blow up.

My insurer has a standard €400 deductible on mainsails (some have €800).
The formula they used to determine the value of a used sail is %25 loss of value in the first year and %15 for every consecutive year.
(My mainsail got FUBAR'ed at Texel last year so thats how I know).

just adding a rider to your existing home-owners insurance. That's what I have and it's very well written out to cover the boat on the water, while trailering, and while the boat is stored. I think I pay just $100 bucks a year for replacement coverage.

Has anyone tried AAA? The Prindle dealer here in LA recommended it.

I have AAA on my F17. No claims yet... I checked around my club and the premium for coverage is similar to what others have.

If you have either a homeowners or car policy, check with that company first. That is what I did, you may be able to get a multiple policy discount or other incentive.
