I've seen a lot of boats with bungee run from the end of the spreaders to the shrouds, which I assume serves the same purpose.

I've been using the bunji tied from the tip of the spreader to the shroud - it works great, but it's a bit of a pain to rig. I think I'm going to go with a loop setup like John's "thingy".
