Posts: 23 Bjärred, Sweden | I was raising my main sail the other day (for the first time) it got stuck and I had a hard time getting it either up or down. In the end the halyard was "wasted". So now I have to get a new halyard. I thought that the reason for the trouble was that the halyard ran inside the mast and that it got stuck somewhere before the block on top of the mast, but when i had a closer look at the mast top i saw that it cannot run outside the mast due to the placement of block at the top of the mast. Did I just had bad luck when the halyard got stuck? I thought that it should be quite easy to raise the main compared with my old Hobie 16. -The main halyard should run inside the mast, correct? -How think should it be, 4mm or less so that it does not get stuck? -Is 20 meter sufficient?

BR Pontus Pontas, The halyard runs down the inside of the mast track on my boat (new last year) and I assume yours is the same. Mine is 3mm I think 20m should be enough as the mast is less than 10m high ! Edit to add "track"

Posts: 1,479 Thailand | Why the need for the convoluted halyard? Seems to me like a waste of effort, money and rope...

Posts: 1,479 Thailand | I see it as an additional and totally unnecessary failure point and a total waste of effort, where effort is not needed. Otherwise it’s OK…

Posts: 1,479 Thailand | The halyard assemble is not necessary and adds another layer of convolution, so from a minimalist perspective it should not be there.

But is that your only alternative? Though it’s quite easy I’ve never needed to lay my Taipan on its side to raise the mainsail. In fact it’s faster then using the convoluted halyard set up.

I use a mainsail halyard because the sailmaker who made my sail used a normal bolt rope and you can't push that up the mast. Push up sails require a flexible plastic tube to used as bolt rope.
So for me and some other sailors it is not a question of choice but necessity.

The halyard is to compensate for the sail manufacturers error. It’s a temporary solution to a bigger issue.
