I've read that placing the felt half of velcro in the daggerboard trunks helps to keep them from sticking in the trunks making raising and lowering much easier. Can someone elaborate on this process? Do you place it just in the front and rear of the trunks or all the way around? My 6.0 boards jam in the trunks and the crew really has to wrestle with them to raise them. How about contact cementing in some carpet or similar.

Hi Jake,

There is a lot of variation in board/slot tightness on NACRAS which affects which method is best for your boat.

My favorite way is to glue some outdoor carpet at the front and back of the slot(2 inches), leaving the middle bare. This puts the pressure at the ends of the board which stabilizes it better without the friction of a fully carpeted slot.

You do have the side-loaders, don't you?

I feel your pain. I, too, have daggar boards that seem to window lock or jamb when you don't pull them out just right. I discovered that when pulling them up, don't just pull straight up. Note that they slip into the trunks on a slight angle fore to aft. If you pull up and ever so slightly forward they slip out like a greased pig. I am going to try to bond in something fuzzy and padded like has been suggested above. I will look for something that is adhesive backed rather than using any goo that will be more permanent then I would prefer.

Sam, good idea.

Did you put the carpet at top and bottom of the wells? or just top?

I find most of the damage & friction in boards is at backend, where board is thin. This is where carpet really helped me, cut down on board damage, kept fine edge longer.

We use Velcro industrial grade "loop side", with the self adhesive back, at both the front and rear of our Mystere Twister F18 boards. It works well, but eventually the glue gives up, sometimes leaving a gummy mess on the board. A little acetone cleans that up, and a new piece is easily applied.

A friend suggested using the regular/plain backed velcro, and some gel-type Krazy Glue. I will likely give that a try. The velcro is a nice thickness for our board/trunk fit.
