Posts: 13 | Greetings, I'm an ole cat sailor for the 60's and 70's. Had the Hobie 14, 16, 18 back then and sailed off Galveston Island. Vast majority was solo and I loved it.
Now I'm nearing 65, 6'4" and 205#'s and want to get back into cat sailing.
Have done some research in the attempt to get up to speed on what has changed in the last 3 decades - WOW! I'm concluding that at my age and the propensity to solo sail with the need to have a boat that can take my wife or a buddy on occasion, the F16 class is what I should go with. It seems the ideal solo or two up rig - put out sails as I need them relative to crew. I will be primarily day sailing and see very little potential to compete, but it would be nice to have that as a remote option.
Thus, I setting out on the pilgrimage to find the best USED F16 to meet my needs yet trying to keep the budget in the less than $12,000 bracket with trailer, less than $10K is even better and at or under $7K is ideal.
That said, I'd sincerely appreciate your guidance as to what brands/models of F16's I should seek out and where are the best places to find them. I interested in what companies have solid reputations for producing excellent F16's.
Ideal cat will be relatively solid/not unduly fragile requiring constant maintenance and expense. It does not have to be the latest generation, a couple iterations back is fine.
Looking forward to your guidance. Jack Naples, FL

Posts: 806 Toronto, Ontario | If you aren't racing then you could look at a Nacra 500. Much simpler than an F16 and a lot less money. For that money you could buy a new one. 500 pic Very similar size to F16. You can sail 1 person or 2. You can right it with 1 person. Optional spin. | | | Re: F16 Purchase Decision Guidence Needed

Nothing against the 5.0, if you have a very tight budget and your only requirement is having a 16 foot boat. Sailing a true F16 is a completely different experience. | | | Re: F16 Purchase Decision Guidence Needed

Around 150Kg+ versus the F16 at 104Kg/107Kg up to a real heavyweight at 130Kg

Posts: 13 | F16 is what I'm really after due to weight and my being a solo sailor a majority of the time. As mentioned in my original post, I'm bumping up against 65 and still have my back in good condition. Wrestling a Hobie 16 or the like up the beach is not going to lengthen the life of my back compared to an F16.
Besides the weight advantage of an F16, I like the versatility it gives me for one up verse two up sailors. I can see myself sailing it much of the time with just the main and a spin. Add the jib when I have a crew member aboard.
So what brands/models/years of F16 used should I be searching for?

Posts: 5,525 | Jack, I forgot to mention the Taipan 4.9. It actually predates the F16 class and was grandfathered into the class. When we weighed boats for the Nationals, we found they were the lightest. There were a couple at Gulfport, you'd have to check with the folks up there. One was damaged in a collision and was repaired the other is original as far as I know.
There are only four models of F16 I'm aware of: Blade, Falcon,Taipan 4.9 and Viper.

Posts: 4,119 Northfield Mn | Yeah, but I think Pete as getting at what's in the US, there's a couple of Stealth's, 1 G-cat, and the NACRA only exists on paper. The others I don't think are here at all.
I'm boatless.

Posts: 264 Long Island, NY | If you've got a den with some empty space to fill on the mantle, a Nacra 500 might be a good deal. With a rating close to a H16 you might bring home some trophies without a lot of effort!I've always thought that the 5.0 (500) was a lot faster than its' rating.
