I'm strongly considering purchasing a catamaran in Nashville, TN. I live in Salt Lake City, UT.

It's a 16', 1991 prindle cat. Probably worth about $1500. If I drove out myself and picked it up, it would cost me about $350. If I can get someone to ship for less than that, I'll do it.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions? Someplace to look for inexpensive shipping options, or perhaps an exchange forum for people driving cross-country with tow capacity to spare?

Thanks!

Hey Utahsailor,

You may want to at least look at it first........Or did I miss something, Have you already seen the boat. I think there have been over 105,000 or so Hobie 16's sold so far. I bet you could find one within a 100 miles or so from you that would work for about the price you want to pay.

Surprisingly, sailing is really unpopular in Utah, even though there are a lot of reservoirs and lakes with good access and decent wind. I haven't seen any hobies for sale here, let alone other brands of catamaran. There are quite a few for sale in California, and that's a do-able weekend drive for me. But finding a 1991 Prindle 16 is even tougher - especially one on an ebay auction currently at $750. Here's the link - let me know what you think.

The only issue seems to be the mast...

If the auction wraps up at a low enough price, I'd consider driving out to TN to get it, or getting it shipped.

Aaron,

Picture looks good, but have you ever tried internet dating? Sometimes the picture and the " real thing " look a lot different! (-:

I don't know of anyplace in Nashville that looks like that. How old is that picture. Plus, you can't see anything. The boat could be so weak you could kick a hole through it just forward of the mainbeam and you couldn't tell by that picture. Also, you can't see the tramp.

I was just hoping you could find one closer to you that you could actually see before you buy and have it shipped.

Yeah, conspiracy theories abound...
The auction holder *claims* he moved to TN from south florida just recently.

St. Louis, MO,
Did you read ...

"Mast does have a slight bow in it – but it still rigs and sails just fine."

This is a red herring. Not worth looking at anymore. Move on and find a straight mast.

Mast damage! SWIM AWAY, SWIM AWAY. If you want a Prindle 16, I know of a very nice one in Colorado, owned by a loving skipper who wants to move up to a bigger boat. Colorado being about 1,000 miles closer to Utah would make this a much easier deal. Send me a note and I'll try to track down his number.

Thanks for the tip. I'm swimming away.

I'm definitely interested in a prindle 16 in CO. What year is it, and how much does he want for it? Thanks SO much!
